A 75-Year-Old Person Doubled the Power of His VW Golf R

We can only wish that we will be as laid back and cool as this guy in our seventies.

It’s easy to be deceived by the appearance of a standard Volkswagen GolfR model in prefacelifted form. However, it is actually an all-wheel-drive beast with more power than its stock counterpart. Our hero had previously owned a BMW M135i and decided to buy Wolfsburg’s 300-horsepower hot car. Some would argue that it was a downgrade, as it has two less cylinders than the Bimmer.

This is no ordinary Golf R. The four-cylinder 2.0-liter engine produces 600 horsepower. It was initially set at 450 hp. Turbonetics installed a huge turbocharger in the engine bay to double the power. This turbo is a new type and it’s still in prototype stage. The VW has the second largest turbo the tuner has ever produced.

Does the turbo work? According to the owner, the turbo is “it does the job.” Although the 2.0 TSI equipped with the turbocharger produces more power, they decided to keep the engine at 600 hp to preserve the four-pot’s reliability over the long term. To make the TSI sing a little better, there were also modifications like a RacingLine airbox and an upgraded intercooler. The changes that the Golf R needed to make to double its power were not significant.

The Golf has more power now than the M135i. This modification was also required and cost more.

This VW Golf R VII is a true sleeper. It’s almost stock from the outside but packs a lot of punch under the hood.
