Mercedes is working on multiple EV-only platforms
Mercedes-Benz has increased its electrification efforts and now wants half of the company’s vehicles to be fully or hybrid electric by 2025. This is in contrast to the previous goal of 25%. A livestream was held by several company executives to outline these plans. They also confirmed previously unannounced models.
Britta Seeger, Mercedes-Benz’s marketing and sales manager, confirms that the EQE SUV is available during the stream. SUV EQS Next year, the vehicle will be available for purchase. A Mercedes-Maybach version is also planned for the EQS SUV.
Seeger confirms that the fully electric G-Class will be available in 2024. According to rumors, could be the first model concept to debut at the IAA in Munich. It is not yet known much about it. It is unclear if it will be an electrified version or a product with unique styling.
Mercedes’ electric vehicle strategy is to have an entirely electric vehicle in all segments by 2022. Every new product launched will be entirely electric-only by 2025. This includes the AMG division. “These AMGs will set new standards in aerodynamics and efficiency. Seeger stated that there will be much more to make these cars electric AMGs.
Mercedes has developed several electric-only platforms to support these vehicles. MMA for compact products will be available in 2024. MB.EA later will be available for medium and large passenger vehicles. AMG.EA is for performance vehicles. VAN.EA is for commercial models.
Mercedes requires a lot of batteries to make these models possible. Through partnerships with other companies, the company plans to establish eight factories for cell production. The company SilaNano is also involved in the development of a next-generation silicon-carbon composite battery.
