2021 BMW X5 xDrive45e PHEV: More Power, More Electric Range

The next generation of BMW’s X5 is available. The SUV has a lot more power than its predecessor. The XDrive45e plug in hybrid is both figuratively as well as literally. It’s also more economical than its predecessor. It boasts nearly 400 horsepower (298kilowatts), which is a serious performance boost.

This new PHEV’s turbocharged 3.0-liter six cylinder engine is the heart of it. The updated powertrain combines a turbocharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine with an electric motor that uses a stronger battery to produce a combined 389 horsepower (290 kW) & 443 pound-feet (603 Newton-meters). An eight-speed Sport Steptronic transmission transfers power to all four wheels, while the X5 has a rear-wheel drive bias for performance-minded drivers.

The gasoline mill produces 282 horsepower (210 kW), while the electric assist adds 111 HP (83 kW). The hybrid X5 has an electric-only range (30 miles) and an electric top speed (84 mph) thanks to a 24-kWh battery. The X5 xDrive45e interior features a wide range of standard features, including a rearview camera and panoramic sunroof, power heated front seats, adaptive LED headlights and Live Cockpit Professional. The newest version BMW’s iDrive system is included. It provides information to the driver and passengers via a 12.3 inch instrument cluster and another 12.3 inch touchscreen infotainment screen.

The standard suite includes navigation, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Blind-spot monitors and land departure warnings, front and rear collision warnings, and cross traffic alert are all available on the driver-assist side. The Driving Assistance Professional Package offers more advanced systems, such as active cruise control.

The 2021 BMW X5 xDrive45e is set to launch in the U.S. in July 2020. The base price of the BMW X5 xDrive45e is $65,400. This does not include $995 destination fees.
