The sedan era is still going strong.
The sedan has gone extinct, and automakers are abandoning them quicker than they did station wagons 20-years ago. There are always survivors, battered and beaten, after every great extinction. But not everyone is lucky. It looks like the Ford Fusion Sport will be the next victim–a vehicle canary in the coal mine. According to Autos Direct Ford will discontinue Fusion Sport in 2020.
According to a spokesperson for Ford, the model’s removal would allow the brand to focus on the styles that consumers desire. Even Fusion enthusiasts should rush to their local dealership as the 2020 model-year is the final year for the iconic sedan Ford introduced in 2005.
The powertrain was what made the Fusion Sport so attractive when Ford released the 2017 version. The engine is a 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6 with 325 horsepower (242 Kilowatts) & 380 pound-feet (515 Newton meters) of torque. The six-speed automatic transmits power to all four wheels. Without the Fusion Sport, Ford’s EcoBoost 2.0 liter is the most powerful engine for the Fusion. It produces 245 hp (182 kW), and 275 lbft (372Nm) of torque.
Ford didn’t make the Fusion Sport stand out from the rest. To signify its sportier ambitions, it has subdued visual cues like 19-inch wheels and quad-tipped exhaust. It is also very expensive. The 2019 model starts at $41,010 including the destination fee. Any hint that you might have been driving a sportier Fusion is also obscured inside. The trunk’s Sport badge is the most obvious indication, but that’s it.
Ford’s Fusion line is rapidly disappearing, and the Fusion Sport’s departure was just a preview. Automobile manufacturers are investing heavily in crossovers, trucks and SUVs. Low-profit models such as the Fusion, which has seen its sales drop, are being the main victims. You may be able get a great deal on a used Fusion Sport in the future if you don’t buy it now.
