BMW M5 Breaks the Record for Longest Vehicle Drift: 232.5 Miles

Five times, the car needed to be refueled while in mid-drift Fast and Furious mode.

BMW released an extended video that was captured during the M5’s eight-hour drift. Johan Schwartz, a BMW Performance Driving School instructor, was behind the wheel of the sedan. He went on to improve his previous performance by drifting the M5 for 51.27 mi (82.51 km).

Johan Schwartz managed to complete more than 2,000 laps on the M5 (F90) while covering 322.5 laps at the BMW Performance Center, South Carolina. The Guinness World Record awarded the HTML5 the record for longest vehicle drift at 232.5 miles (374.17 kilometers) after the exhausting run. The old records of the Toyota GT86 were broken by BMW: 89.55 mile (144.12km) in July 2014, and 102.5 mile (165.04 km) June 2017.

As a support vehicle for car-to-car fuelling, another BMW M5 (of previous generation) was needed. It had to fuel the 600-horsepower biturbo V8 4.4-liter engine for five times as much as the car was moving. This is a lot like Fast and Furious. During the quick refueling process, the M5s collided several times.

It is worth noting that the road surface was wet to allow for the long drift. However, the feat is impressive considering the driver had been driving sideways for eight hours with no interruptions. BMW managed to break another record for longest twin vehicle drift (water-assisted) at 39.25 miles (63.16km).

Below is a behind-the scenes video that shows the risks BMW had as Matt Butts, a refueler, could have been caught between the M5s. It was also important to consider the fire danger of pouring 15-18 gallons fuel into a moving vehicle in less than 50 seconds. Although things didn’t go according to plan during the test day the official attempt was a success.
