The annoying fake extra panels remain, but the double bubble roofing appears to be the final design.

Toyota has teased us for three years with its resurrected Supra, considering that the FT-1 concept captivated the crowd at NAIAS Detroit in January 2014. The two-seater coupe will have a roadster companion wearing the BMW badge. It will replace the Z4. These two models are part a continuing collaboration between the automakers. As such, they will share the majority of the bits.

The latest spy photos show the Toyota Supra (name unknown) at a gas station on the BMW Z5’s German home turf, Germany. Although it may look a bit too big, this is because the camouflaged prototype was fitted with extra panels that were attached to the body using tiny rivets. This double bubble roof, inspired by the FT-1, doesn’t appear to have this type of disguise. There are enough reasons to believe that we are seeing the final design for the fixed metal roof.

The Supra’s taillights are not the same. Although the shape of their cluster is expected to be ready for production, the lights themselves remain provisional. The same applies to the front, where the final form of the headlights will be used. However, the internal components will change as the road-going car gets closer.

According to rumours, Toyota will preview its Supra reboot for the last time at the Tokyo Motor Show in October. The report suggests that we will need to wait at least a year before seeing the high-performance coupe in its full production glory. The premiere of the BMW Z5 is yet to be announced, but some believe it will happen before 2017.

The fifth-generation Supra will be joined by the GT86 in Toyota’s sports car lineup. Recent gossip suggests that the MR2 will also return.
