We can only look at the time it has taken for the segment to get real competition. Muscle Cars and Trucks interviewed Senior Brand Manager Carl Lally about the four-year wait, and why it took so much time to get things moving.
While we knew Ram was close to launching a direct competitor to the Ford Raptor’s, there was no confirmation. In 2016, Ram unveiled the Rebel TX concept. It featured a Hellcat V8 engine with more than 500 horsepower and other upgrades. Although it looked like it could be quickly put into production, Ram decided to keep it quiet despite the demand for it to become a reality. It had to be done right.
“Back in ’16, it was a concept. We wanted to find out what the appetite was for such a truck. Lally stated that it was a very positive experience. They were still developing the current Ram 1500, so they felt more at ease starting with a blank slate. We didn’t want to rush to market and put an engine in a truck. Instead, we wanted to take our sweet time and make sure everything is right.
Ram is getting positive feedback from the public. Ford is also rumored to be working on a V8 version for the new-generation Ford Raptor.
