Yes, the next Challenger or Charger will be based on the sporty Giulia sedan.
Alfa Romeo promised to unveil eight models that are based on the Giorgio platform. The architecture may also be used by many other vehicles in the Fiat Chrysler Automobiles conglomerate. A new report by Automotive News states that the rear-wheel drive Giorgio is being shared with Maserati and Dodge.
Sergio Marchionne, CEO of FCA, stated to A that “the entire Maserati development after 2018” was designed for the new platform. This is in addition to large Jeeps, and the next generation RWD Dodge vehicles. This confirms what Alfa head Reid Bigland said last year. After the Stelvio SUV, the Giulia sedan became the first to adopt this architecture. A coupe version of this sporty sedan will join them, is expected to arrive in Geneva next year.
Marchionne stated that Alfa Romeo’s investment and the technical investment in architecture were intended to benefit more than Alfa, after FCA reported fourth-quarter earnings. “I am happy that we have finally reached clarity in the extension and use of these architectures beyond Alfa.”
According to reports, Dodge will be using a cheaper version of the platform for the development of its next generation of RWD-drive models. This includes the Challenger and Charger. According to an unnamed source, Maserati would use a similar platform, but with some modifications, for its next Quattroporte and Ghibli models, as well as the next GranTurismo and Alfieri.
Alfa Romeo is currently in its major revival plan. It will cost $5.37B and should increase Alfa Romeo’s annual unit sales by almost a fifth to 400,000 vehicles before the end of the decade. Marchionne confirmed that Alfa lost money last fiscal year and will lose money again this fiscal year. He expects a 2018 benefit.
