Audi S1 tuned at 380 horsepower is a wolf dressed in sheep’s clothes

Audi doesn’t make an RS1, but the tuned S1 can be used as a replacement.

The current A1 is too old to get the RS treatment. However, the tuners at B&B Automobiltechnik have an alternative. The modified can be found in any of five tuning stages. The strongest stage pushes the turbocharged 2.0-liter engine up to 380 horsepower (279kilowatts), and 399 poundfeet (509 newton meters) of torque. A stock S1 facelift has 231 horsepower (170 kW) & 273 lb.ft (370Nm).

The power gains are not all that impressive. However, the larger Audi RS3 Sportback’s 2.5-liter five-cylinder engine produces 367 hp and 465 Nm. So the smaller S1 from B&B is quite capable. It will reach 62 mph (100 km/h) with the stage 5 kit and take 16.8 seconds to complete the sprint from 0 to 124 mph (0 to 200 kph), before reaching 177 mph (285 km/h).

These are great performances for the pocket rocket but they will cost you. B&B charges more than EUR10,000 (or $11,110) for the entire package. You can also pay more for additional goodies like the optional sports spring set (EUR298/$331) which will lower your S1 by 35mm. You can get additional stopping power to match the larger engine for EUR3,295/ $3,663. The set includes 342-mm vented front disks that are 342-mm in diameter. These discs can be paired up with the tuner’s 18-inch wheels for EUR2,298/ $2,554.

The A1/S1 is being manufactured in Brussels, Belgium. However, that will change in 2018, when the assembly will move to SEAT’s Martorell plant in Spain. The supermini will likely switch to a new generation, which is reportedly a little longer and will have that fancy 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster known as the Audi Virtual Cockpit.
