The “X” has been removed.
Opel has begun the teaser game for its new Mokka. This is a significant departure from the previous model in terms not only of design but also the underpinnings, and even the name. The spy photos of early March and a new batch from today reveal that the small crossover will adopt a much sharper appearance likely derived from the 2018 GT X Experimental concept.
Although Russelsheim isn’t very generous in sharing details about the new Mokka model, it is widely believed that the refreshed model will be riding on the platform of PSA Peugeot Citroen, Opel’s new parent company. The CMP platform is what we’re referring to, so the second generation will share a lot with the first. Peugeot 2008 the posh DS3 Crossback.
Opel claims that a fully-electric version is in development and will prioritize the EV model. The zero-emissions model will go on sale first in 2021. The EV model will be available for those who aren’t willing to pay the extra cost or prefer a conventional engine, just as it was with the French counterpart.
The revamped Opel Mokka will offer a turbocharged, 1.2-liter three-cylinder gasoline engine that produces 100, 130 and 155 horsepower respectively. There will also be a 1.5-liter four cylinder diesel engine with 100 or 130 horsepower. The e-2008-inspired EV model will use a 136-hp electric engine and a 50-kWh battery pack that can provide enough power to go nearly 200 miles (322 km) between charges.
Opel has no information to share about the interior. It is likely that the new Mokka will have a fully digitalized interior and that some buttons will be replaced by touchscreens. The interior will be Corsa-like, but the Mokka has more space for passengers.
Opel says it will unveil the new Mokka “soon”, so we can expect a global debut in the next weeks or months. We don’t expect a new Buick Encore based upon the next-gen Mokka, as this North American model was created at a time Opel and Vauxhall still fell under GM’s aegis.
