VW hopes the electric hatchback will have the same impact on the public as the Beetle or Golf.
Following last night’s debut, the 2020 Volkswagen ID.3 will be featured in a series videos that spotlight what the company considers its third most important vehicle after the Beetle or Golf. The five-door hatchback’s new design language is reserved for the upcoming ID series of pure electric models. It distinguishes the EVs from conventionally powered Volkswagens.
Although it is rare for an automaker to correctly use the term “all new,” the ID.3 was developed from scratch. The familiar VW logo is now slightly updated to signify the wave of future. Wolfsburg has been investing heavily in electric vehicles to forget about Dieselgate. The zero-emissions hatch is about the same size as a Golf, and it’s just one of many ID cars that Wolfsburg plans to produce over the next decade.
Although looks may be subjective, the ID.3 is a standout among the ICE-powered vehicles offered by VW’s core brand. Its exterior is a departure from the eGolf that it replaces. The minimalist interior is also a first by the German brand. If you haven’t noticed, the brake and accelerator pedals now have “pause” and “play” logos.
These videos show not only the regular ID.3, they also feature the limited-run, upscale launch edition. VW has received over 30,000 preorders for the latter. It is equipped with a mid-range 58-kWh lithium battery. It has 201 horsepower (150 kW) and 310 Newton-meters (229 pounds-feet of torque) that are channeled to its rear wheels.
The ID.3 1 st will start at less than EUR40,000 in Europe. It will be available in three fixed configurations. The range-topper is a “Max” model that includes everything, from a head-up display, Beats sound system, to a panoramic sliding roof, and 20-inch wheels.
The 2020 VW ID.3 production will begin in November. However, the first deliveries to customers won’t take place until next summer.
