Even in camo wrap, it looks great. It should drive just as well, we hope.
We were already eager for the new Supra, to arrive before Toyota presented the GR Supra Racing Concept at Geneva. Every time we see spy photos like those taken by our photographers today, our necks swell and our sighs grow deeper. This car is essential, right now.
Unfortunately, it is not possible to have it right away. According to current rumors, the Supra’s new production-ready model will be unveiled next year at Detroit Auto Show 2019. We’ve been waiting for a new Supra for over a decade so the prospect of a few months more is not surprising. However, this doesn’t mean we are less excited to get behind the wheel.
The current set of photos still shows the car covered in a camouflage wrap. However, this spy photo may be the best of all the spy shots we have seen to show the production car’s curves. There are many curves to admire. We love the quarter-panel arches above the rear wheels and the double bubble on the roof.
We admit that we have a nagging suspicion that the Supra may just be a new BMW Z4 with the Toyota badge. They are currently being developed together. They will share the same platform. Recent reports state that they will actually share many suspension components and powertrain components. It could feel like a Toyota suit with BMW-source inline-six engine, which could lead to serious disappointment.
Both Toyota and BMW stated that both cars will have different tuning and personalities despite sharing the same DNA. This latest batch of spy photos is quite reassuring in that the curves of the Supra are different from the Z4 spy photos. The gallery above shows the straighter shape of the Bimmer. The Supra’s rebirth should be even more sweetened by the fact that both cars are just as enjoyable to drive as they are to view (so far anyway).
