It can also drive through rivers.
It has been less than a month since the introduction to the first all-new Mercedes Benz G-Class SUV for many years. We are now ready to embrace AMG’s redesigned version. It’s not a slouch, as you might expect. We’ll be introducing the 2019 Mercedes-AMG G63. This SUV can reach 60 mph in just 4.4 seconds. That’s almost a full second faster than its high-performance predecessor.
How is the HTML63 able to accomplish this feat? Although you may think that the AMG-supplied power increase deserves all the credit for this feat, it’s only one part. For the G63, the 4.0-liter biturbo engine V8 has been retained. However, it has been reworked to produce 577 horsepower (430 megawatts). This is a lot of power, but it’s still only 14 horsepower (10 kW) more than the G63. Credit must be given to the substantial weight difference between old and new models, namely 375 pounds (174 kg).
The G63’s 577 horsepower matches the GT R. This SUV’s engine produces a massive 627 pound feet (850 newton meters) of twist. It’s more than 100 horsepower more than the GT R, and 60 more than the AMG G63. Add all these factoids up and suddenly you have a boxy G-Class that can outrun many hardcore sport sedans in daily stoplight-to-stoplight battles.
The new G63 is much more than its engine. The AMG Speedshift TCT nice speed automatic is responsible for handling the power. It also has a full manual mode. This can be shifted using paddle shifters on the AMG-specific sports steering wheel. AMG’s tuned 4MATIC all-wheel drive sends 60 percent of power backward, and AMG suspension tweaks provide standard-issue adaptive damping that can be adjusted for both on-road and off-road performance. The AMG Dynamic Selection functions can adjust most settings. There are four options available and a fifth that can be customized by drivers.
The unique vertical-bar grille distinguishes the Mercedes-AMG G63 visually. AMG-specific front fascia features slightly larger intakes and wheel arches that can accommodate larger wheels up to 22 inches in diameter. The V8’s song is sent out through a revamped active exhaust system. There are two noise levels available: a quiet rumble or a louder roar. AMG upgrades also include special badges, AMG door sills and red brake disc brakes with perforated disc brakes.
Mercedes will launch an “Edition 1” exclusive model of the G63 later in the year. This will be the G-Class flagship. Edition 1 will receive a black coat with matte gray stripes along the sides and red stripes at the mirrors. AMG Night Package will be available for the G63, which includes tinted taillights and headlights as well as black 22-inch wheels.
The 2018 Mercedes-AMG G63 will be unveiled at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show. Prices will be announced later. Models will go on sale at the end of 2018.
