It will be made in Germany once again.
Opel has completed the development of the updated Astra model for Europe. However, this model will not be available for sale for approximately two years. A press release from the German manufacturer has been released, providing more information about the production of the next generation Astra. It is expected to arrive in 2021.
The new model will be built on the PSA Group’s EMP2 platform. This will enable hybridized powertrains to launch. Opel is pleased to announce that the new Astra model will be manufactured at Russelsheim, Germany. This Russelsheim location will continue production of the Insignia.
Opel CEO Michael Lohscheller comments that this is a significant step forward for Russelsheim’s plant. “This investment will allow for work in two shifts, and ensure the sustainability of the Russelsheim factory.”
PSA’s decision in Germany to bring back production of Astra was possible due to investments in Russelsheim, which will bring about significant improvements in efficiency and competitiveness in comparison to other PSA Group plants. The Astra is currently being assembled in Ellesmere Port (UK), and Gliwice in Poland. It was also produced in Russelsheim from 2009 to 2015.
Yann Vincent, Executive Vice President of Manufacturing & Supply Chain at PSA adds, “Increasing competitiveness and efficiency are part of Groupe PSA’s production DNA” Russelsheim is a company I trust to make the Opel Astra’s next generation.
It is not clear at the moment if the model will be assembled in England after the new generation arrives.
