Mercedes A-Class Sedan: The Most Aerodynamic Production Vehicle

It has a drag coefficient only 0.22 and is just as sleek as CLA.

Three months after unveiling China’s long-wheelbase A Class Sedan, Mercedes has launched the teaser campaign to promote the regular model that will be sold worldwide. The aerodynamic efficiency of this sedan is the focus of the first episode. It will have a drag coefficient only 0.22. This number is familiar because the first ever A-Class Sedan will be as sleek as the CLA in 180 CDI blueEfficiency guise, the current record holder.

Isn’t it the XL1 one of the most aerodynamic production cars ever made? Both yes and no. Although the drag coefficient for this diesel hybrid is only 0.19, we must also consider that Volkswagen has produced just 250 units. This is a far cry away from making the two-seater with a radically designed exterior a regular series production vehicle, as the CLA and the A-Class Sedan are.

To achieve this number Mercedes spent a lot time in the wind tunnel together with the A-Class Sedan. The front and rear spoilers were modified to channel air around the wheels. These spoilers were aerodynamically optimized, and the tires were custom-built. The car may be offered with an optional, two-part shutter system behind the radiator grille. This will reduce the airflow through the engine bay.

Mercedes created a new sealing system for the sedan. This included sealing the area around the headlights. It also made the underbody almost completely paneled. The A-Class Sedan was designed in Sindelfingen (Germany), where the company has a wind-tunnel. It will be constructed near Rastatt, Mexico, which is just over 50 miles from the factory.

It will inherit the hatchback’s 2729-millimeter (107.3-inch) wheelbase, engines, safety kit and technology. Mercedes claims the A-Class Sedan bound for the U.S. will have the best rear headroom in its class and will use the company’s MBUX infotainment platform, which was used in the five-door model.

In the coming weeks, expect an official unveiling.
