The popularity of camper vans and motorhomes is on the rise right now. A new segment of RVs includes dual-purpose machines. This is similar to the conversion vans that were popular in the 1980s and 1990s. The older vans featured velour-clad sofas and televisions on the roof. However, the new generation is more versatile and can be used for camping while still maintaining their everyday functionality. The ModVans CV1 was a prime example, and caught our attention at the RVX camper expo.
The CV1 is made from your regular Ford Transit cargo can. The modular components are then assembled to provide basic necessities for weekend travelers, such as a stove, sink and refrigerator. The unit is equipped with a shore power outlet that allows it to plug in at campsites with electricity. A sleek electrical system with marine-grade components keeps the lights on. You can also purchase a 2,000-watt solar charging station.

The CV1’s party trick is an electrically-operated top that raises to provide additional headroom inside as well as space for two adults to sleep in the “upstairs” bunk. The kitchen area can be converted to a second bed that is large enough to accommodate two additional adults. The van’s second row seating can be swiveled to the wall and the passenger seat can swivel backward. This creates a comfortable dining area. The roof rack has additional storage and a roof-mounted air conditioner that keeps things cool.
The CV1 can be used as a regular five-passenger van, with cargo space in the back. ModVans claims that the CV1 can be removed from the modular components and seats, and it is now a fully-functional cargo-carrying vehicle. Although the van’s interior isn’t as luxurious as dedicated RVs, we can’t fault its versatility.
ModVans’ website states that the CV1 base trim is available at a special price of $77,000. Although it may seem expensive, it is still a lower price than many dedicated RVs comparable in size, and they are not as capable of daily tasks. ModVans currently has a ten month lead time between order and delivery.
