The DB prefix could be lost by the sports car.
Aston Martin plans to release new models and updated versions of the existing models over the next few years. The manufacturer plans to expand the DBX with a variety of new variants, as well as a DBX V12 and two all-new electric vehicles.
Autocar quotes a report by Financial Times, based on an interview with Aston Martin chairman Lawrence Stroll. He confirmed that the new zero-emissions models would be in production by 2025 when he spoke to the publication at Gaydon’s headquarters. Two vehicles will be available: an SUV and a sports car.
Stroll informed the FT the high-riding electric vehicle would be made in Wales, where Aston Martin produces the DBX. The EV sports car will then be built at Gaydon. Both cars should be on the market by 2025.
The new electric models will likely be similar to the company’s existing combustion-powered models. They will use technology from Mercedes-Benz which currently holds a 20% stake in the British firm. Aston Martin doesn’t yet have an electric drivetrain or a dedicated platform for EVs, so cooperation with Mercedes may be the solution to its problems in the near- and mid-term.
The fact that both cars could be equipped with Mercedes-sourced tech is one thing we know. Stroll stated that the sports car would be a front-engine version of a DB11/Vantage, though details about the final design and naming are still unknown. Aston Martin may drop the famous DB prefix, but it will still use “our beautiful body”, our suspension, vehicle dynamics, and our bespoke interiors.
