Reveal, EQB Due 2021
The three-pointed star is positive there is room in the lineup to add another SUV.
You’ve probably seen the Mercedes press conference and know that the Daimler board member responsible for Mercedes brand announced a major development. Britta Seeger briefly spoke about the new GLB compact crossover at the end of the conference. We now know that it will be available in production form by the summer. Didn’t this concept just come out of Auto Shanghai? It was. But Mercedes is determined to bring the SUV on the market. This is why it’s not wasting any time in launching this boxy vehicle.
More Info:
Although the Concept GLB won’t be on display at the New York Auto Show the Model is very important for Mercedes. It makes sense that the announcement was made in New York. Seeger also revealed plans to make a fully-electric version of the Concept GLB available for sale in 2021. The zero-emissions crossover was seen in testing a few weeks ago. It will be called EQB and will fit underneath the EQC currently displayed in the Big Apple in a limited-run 1886 guise.
The details of these crossovers are not known, but it is safe to assume that the more conventionally-powered model will be able to borrow the majority of the oily bits and technology as well as the interior design from Mercedes’ new compact cars. These include the A-Class hatchback, B-Class minivan and the first-ever AClass Sedan. Although the latter has been able to produce a more practical CLA Shooting brake, the wagon is not coming to the U.S.
Spy shots show that the EQB will not depart from the ICE-powered design, but there will be some modifications to this area and denote that it is electric. It also belongs to Mercedes’ new EQ subbrand. According to rumours, the battery pack will be at least 60 kWh in capacity. This should allow it to travel a maximum distance of 310 miles (500 km) using the realistic WLTP cycle that was introduced recently in Europe.
Mercedes is likely to organize an event in June for the GLB, instead of revealing the model at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September.
