It won’t be known as Allroad because it doesn’t have all-wheel driving.
The WorldCarFans staff had an idea back in the old days for a rugged version the current-gen A3 Sportback. The premium compact hatchback was given a lifted suspension, a silver front plate and plastic body cladding around its wheel arches. Rumours have circulated about a more versatile but the car won’t be available at any Audi dealer. Auto Express reports that the next generation will be more adventurous.
Audi apparently believes that there’s a gap between Q2 and Q3 crossovers, and wants to fill it by an A3 “Cityhopper.” That’s the model codename (thankfully),, and not the badge you’ll see on top of the real thing. The “Allroad” model won’t have the Quattro all wheel-drive system. The engine will still transmit its power to the front axle, despite being more outdoorsy. According to reports, the decision to not use the all-paw system was made to reduce the car’s CO 2 emissions.
The vehicle will have a rugged exterior and a longer suspension travel. It is expected to measure between the Q2’s 4.19m (165 inches) and the Q3’s 4.48m (176.6 inches). Expect a length of around 4.3m (169 inches). The Volvo decision to modify the V40’s body styling means that there will be no V40 Cross Country with the same formula. This will mean that the A3 Cityhopper won’t have any direct competition in the premium compact segment. The new Audi will compete with mainstream models such as Ford’s Focus Active, Toyota’s Corolla Cross.
The crossover-inspired model of the A3 family will ride on an evolution MQB platform, and possibly feature a mild hybrid configuration. Rumours suggest that power will come from turbocharged 1.5- and 2.0 liter gasoline engines, joined by the usual 1.6 and 2.0 liter TDIs.
The redesigned A3 Sportback will likely be revealed at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September. However, the Cityhopper is not expected until 2022. It is said to have a starting price that is higher than the Q2 but lower than Q3’s.
Last note: It’s worth reminding the audience that spy photos have shown that the A1 supermini will be receiving the crossover-derived treatment. It is unknown if that supermini will receive the “Allroad” suffix, and/or Quattro.
