Toyota may be developing a sports car that will be placed underneath the GT86.
Toyota is apparently cooking up a new sports car set to be positioned underneath the GT86.
Motoring has been told by sources close to Toyota Japan that the model will be powered by a four-cylinder 1.5 liter engine producing 130 bhp (97kW). The engine is wrapped in a body that weighs just 980 kg (2160 lbs). Toyota’s Miata codenamed “69DZ” will reportedly be inspired by the 1965 Toyota Sports 800. The final styling will share a lot with the 86 Style Cbpictured previously. Expect to see rounded headlights and unusual “lumps” on the hood. There will also be short front and rear overhangs. Flared wheel arches and curvy silhouettes.
The 2+2 RWD coupe will likely get both manual 6-speed and automatic Aisin gearboxes, sourced from the GT86. Toyota may have hired Tommi Makinen, an ex-WRC driver, to refine the model’s handling.
If the report is true, Toyota’s baby GT86 will go on sale in 2018
