Alfa Romeo 8C could have as much as 800 horses

The Giulia Quadrifoglio twin-turbo V6 will be the inspiration for this mid-engined coupe, but it will have an electric twist.

The revival of the 8C was the main topic when Alfa Romeo unveiled its 2018-2022 product roadmap in June. The Italians were kind enough not to reveal any technical details, but they did mention that the coupe will be built around a monocoque carbon fiber chassis and a twin-turbo engine with mid-mounted power.

Although a combined output of over 700 horsepower was promised, a new report suggests that Alfa Romeo may have underestimated the car’s hybrid power. It is now believed that the number will be closer to the 800-hp mark. CAR magazine has obtained some juicy details about the mid-engined coupe that will go on sale in 2021.

The 8C’s heart will be a twin-turbo, 2.9-liter engine. It is a combination of the Quadrifoglio-spec Giulia sedan or Stelvio SUV. The V6 will be modified to make more power for the new application. What’s more? The two Q models are 505 horsepower each, but rumors suggest that the upgraded engine, co-developed by Ferrari, will unleash close to 600 horsepower.

It won’t just be the combustion engine. An electric motor will also be used to create a hybrid setup that we can see in the Maserati Alfieri. CAR says it will produce approximately 150 kilowatts (201 horsepower), which, when combined with the V6’s power, will give the 8C an impressive output of around 800 horsepower.

Alfa Romeo already stated that the 8C will be able to reach 62 mph in three seconds (100 km/h) from a standstill in less than three seconds. This is a great sign of the car’s potential performance. It will be all-wheel-drive, thanks to the ICE driving the rear wheels as well as the electric motor powering its front axle.

The bad news? The bad news? It will be priced at a premium because of the high-performance it promises. There will also be limited availability. According to reports, the car’s production will be limited to 1,000 units.

Alfa Romeo’s new sports car will be more affordable, and is essentially a Giulia Quadrifoglio coupe.
