This would be a fascinating way to keep the old model current.
There are rumors that Chevrolet won’t give the Camaro a new generation. This would mean the Camaro will be the second model to lose its sanity. Car Buzz has not cited specific sources, but new speculation suggests that the Bowtie could revive the model as an electric performance vehicle.
When asked about this rumor, Kevin Kelly, Chevy spokesperson, stated Motor1.com that they would not speculate on future products.
This speculation centers around engineer Al Oppenheiser, who is moving from leading Camaro’s team to leading GM’s electric vehicle design. Oppenheiser is already an expert in the design and construction of performance cars, so it is possible that he could combine his knowledge with the creation of a fast EV that will sport the Camaro moniker.
Oppenheiser joined the EV team only in January 2019. If this speculation is true, the electric Camaro will still be many years away. The rumor last week about the model’s demise suggests that it is still possible. The pony car is dead beyond 2023 In Chevy’s product strategy. This means that there could still be years between the arrival of the EV and the end of the current generation.
The eCopo Camaro concept (gallery below) shows that Chevy engineers are open to the idea of an electric pony-car. It produced 700 horsepower (522 Kilowatts) as well as 600 pound-feet (814 Newton meters) of torque. The model was capable of running quarter miles in 9.837 seconds.
Chevy will update the styling of the 2020 Camaro to compensate for the more polarizing design changes for 2019. A new LT1 model is also available that allows the 6.2-liter V8 to be used without having to choose the SS trim. Other attractive options include Rally Green paint, and orange brake discs.
