The speedo accelerates to 163 MPH, and begs for more.
We saw a similar speedometer video of the Toyota Supra sprinting to 124 mph (200km/h). This is well below the factory’s 155-mph (249 km/h) electronic speed limiter. The YouTube channel L’argus has a new video. It’s not quite as conservative. The driver keeps the thin pedal in place until the invisible top speed limit is reached, then he breaks through. You know what? It doesn’t take long to build a car with 335 horsepower (250kilowatts). We’ll get to that later.
Super Supra:
We do not know the exact location, altitude or weather conditions of the run. Technically, we cannot confirm that this is a speed run and not a car that sits stationary on a Dyno. However, we are 99.9% certain that this is the real deal as there are many moments when shadows blast across Supra’s digital instruments cluster. The acceleration doesn’t seem to be as fast as we would expect at the extreme end of the spectrum.
In just 30 seconds, the car can go from a standstill at 163 mph (263 km/h), which is just a few clicks above its official top speed. Although the Supra’s 3.0-liter Inline Six pulls at 6,500 RPM, the transmission is in sixth gear. However, the engine has enough power to keep the speed limiter in seventh and eighth. We can see a stock Supra moving much faster if we consider that acceleration and the steady acceleration before the electronic nanny came in. Is that 180 mph?
Sandbagging Supra?
This adds fuel to the debate about Toyota sandbagging A90 Supra’s horsepower rating. The I6 BMW-sourced engine can produce more power than that. It produces 382 horsepower (285 kW), in the Z4. A recent dyno test performed by Driver on a media car returned 339 horsepower (253 kW), at the rear wheels. The crankshaft is where the manufacturer power ratings are established. This means that the Supra could have more than 400 horsepower after taking into account driveline power losses. However, it is possible for errors to be made in the dyno figures. Also, since the Supra is a media vehicle, it is possible that Toyota has given us a surprise to impress journalists.
