Re It Is: The Last Volkswagen Beetle You Will Ever Make

You can say goodbye to your automotive icon.

James May, host of the Grand Tour, called the Volkswagen Beetle “the most significant and important car ever produced.” Since its introduction in 1938, the VW Beetle have spent over 80 years transporting people to school, work, school, first dates and meet-ups as well as job interviews and other events. All good things have to come to an end, and the Beetle is that month. VW announced production is now complete for the Beetle.

It is amazing that only three generations of the Beetle have been produced after 81 years. The iconic Beetle, made famous by Herbie, the Love Bug, was retired in 2003. However, in 1998, the German automaker introduced a New Beetle, a two-door vehicle that combines modern vehicle design and the Beetle’s arched appearance. VW made the Beetle even more sleeker in 2011, removing its iconic round top and making it more coupe-like, even though the roof was perfectly integrated into the rear.

The Volkswagen Beetle will always be cool:

Although initial sales were strong, consumers were forced to buy crossovers and SUVs due to the car’s quirky appearance. The U.S. saw a mere 14,411 Volkswagen Beetles sold in 2018, the lowest number since 2011, when VW switched from the second-gen Beetle model to the current one.

The last VW Puebla Beetle will be taken to the museum of Volkswagen in the city. Volkswagen of America will be adding the last American-made cars to its collection of historic vehicles. The factory will now focus its efforts on producing a compact SUV for the North American market. It will be below the Tiguan. Although it is sad to see this icon go, Keogh stated in the press release that “While its time has passed, the role it played in the evolution and growth of our brand will remain forever cherished.”
