The JDM-spec supermini has been updated with a facelift.
Although the fourth-generation Mazda2 is known for its existence for five years, the tiny hatchback has just received a mid-cycle update. The supermini was introduced today in Japan. It has been renamed to the global Mazda2 brand, which you can buy in North America in 2020 as the Toyota Yaris.
Although the styling changes are subtle, they don’t seem to be a major change from the Mazda2, which was one of the most fashionable models in its class. The new Mazda3 has some of its design elements, but it combines them with a refined interior that allows for a more comfortable driving experience.
2020 Mazda2 packs more tech than ever. There are adaptive LED headlights and traffic sign recognition. These changes are not just cosmetic. Mazda has changed the suspension to provide a more comfortable ride. The interior’s refinement has improved since the NVH levels were lowered. Buyers will also be able to choose an optional heated steering column, six-way adjustable driver seat, radar cruise control, and an auto-dimming backview mirror. The infotainment system supports both Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.
In Europe, where all Mazda2s are front-wheel-drive, there will be a 1.5-liter gasoline motor with 75 or 90 horsepower. There will also be a six speed manual gearbox and an optional six speed auto for the more powerful unit. The B-segment will be available with an all-wheel-drive 1.8-liter diesel engine.
The Japanese sales of the Mazda supermini will begin on September 12th. European buyers will need to wait until 2020 to purchase it.
