Volkswagen Golf R Dropped For 2020, Returns As Mk8 VW’s most beloved hot hatch will be taking a short break. The lineup of Volkswagen is changing. The popularity of EVs has meant that cars such as the Beetle and more niche offerings like the Golf Alltrack or SportWagen are no longer available. They are not the only ones. According to a new report, the Golf R will be the next victim. Motor Authority was informed by VW that the Mk7 Golf R will not be available in the United States for 2020. The VW spokesperson confirmed the report by emailing us: “With the Wolfsburg factory making preparations for the switchover to the next generation Golf models, the Golf R is going to take a short hiatus before being back as an Mk8.” Officially Unveiled: VW Golf 8 For the moment, and other versions of the Mk7 Golf will remain for 2020. A Golf Value Edition, e-Golf in SE and Premium trims, and the GTI in SE and SE grades will all be available in the States during the new model year. However, this does not mean that the Golf R will be discontinued. In May VW confirms The new Mk8 Golf R or GTI will be the only two choices of five-doors available in the U.S. We’ve seen prototypes . American buyers will not be able get the Mk8 Golf standard, or the Alltrack, or SportWagen as previously reported. If true, VW’s most powerful Golf will be gone. It has 288 horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque. We wait for the Mk8 Golf to arrive later in the year. We don’t know much about the powertrain of the new Golf, but we do know that it will include standard features such as LED headlights and a fully digital instrument cluster. According to reports, the Mk8 Golf will be making its debut at Wolfsburg’s new Golf factory this October. It is not known if the GTI and Golf R, both bound for America, will be present at this time.
