The Porsche 928 Tom Cruise Drove In “Risky Business”

He also learned to drive a stick-shift on it.

Two Porsche 928 coupes have been sold so far this year. A third will soon be on the market. Barrett-Jackson announced that it will be selling the 1979 Porsche 928, which starred alongside Tom Cruise at 1983’s Uncertain Business. The auction will take place in Houston, 2021. The car is going to auction without a reserve and its impressive provenance could increase the price.

Barrett-Jackson clarifies, however, that this is not the Porsche which saw the bottom Lake Michigan. It’s actually one of three cars that was used during filming. However, several others were used throughout production. The film’s iconic chase scene featured this coupe. But, the most fascinating part is that Cruise drove this 928 Cruise to learn how to drive a stick-shift. The car was also the subject of a documentary called The Quest for the RB928. (Risky Business 928). This documentary follows the hunt for this 928.

The Porsche 928 Tom Cruise Drove In "Risky Business"

Risky Business director Paul Brickman preferred the 928 to the 911, as he felt the 911 was “too boring” next to the front engine coupe. Thanks to its 4.5-liter V8 engine, the 928 was no slouch for its age. The car produced 219 horsepower (163 megawatts) at the factory. This allowed it to reach 60 mph (96 km/h) in just 6.5 seconds. It could reach a top speed at 143 mph (230 km/h).

The 928’s manual five-speed gearbox sends power to the rear wheels. These are offset 5-hole aluminum alloy 16-inch wheels. The original Porsche car was painted green. However, the interior of the cork-oncork leather Porsche car was painted tan. The car was eventually placed in a private climate-controlled collection after filming ended for Risky Business. Barrett-Jackson’s Houston auction starts on September 18.
