It is amazing how well the cars match.
Ah, the distinct sound of a V10 motor. The 10-pot is only used by a few cars, but this drag racing video shows two of them. The Dodge Viper used a V10 for almost three decades. We now see how the Audi R8 and V10 from Lamborghini compare in a race of speed.
This is a very fitting showdown as both cars have naturally aspirated V10 engine and only two people. Track Day posted a series drag racing videos that smashed down a large field of competitors to bring down just two. This is the final showdown: front-engine versus middle-engine.
However, the cars are not all equal. The engine placement is not the only difference. The Viper has headers and an engine tune. According to the video, the 8.4-liter V10 produces 700 horsepower (522kW), which seems like a strong challenge for second-generation R8’s 532-hp (397kW) motor. The R8 is equipped with all-wheel drive, a fast-shifting dual clutch transmission, and its engine doesn’t look stock. The Audi boasts 670 horsepower (500 kW) and has been fitted with stage 2 tuning and an exhaust upgrade. It should be a great fight.
It is also a different format. Instead of starting from a stop at a quarter-mile track, the race takes place on a runway with rolling start. This negates Audi’s all-wheel drive advantage but doesn’t prevent the car from winning its first sprint. The launch was a little too fast for the Audi driver, so the Viper does not gain enough ground to win.
The Viper may have a slight advantage in the second run, which has a more even starting. This advantage is maintained throughout the pull with the American machine finishing ahead of the Audi. The rolling race started at 30 mph, compared to 40 for the first race. The Viper may have had an advantage by running at a slower speed.
The stage was set for a decisive third race with a win in each column. Unfortunately, technical problems prevented this from happening. We are now in a bit of a dilemma. Stock for stock, Viper seems to have an advantage. However, racing from a dig would give Audi a huge advantage. We are the true winner, as we can enjoy a 20-cylinder supercar symphony in action.
