Although it is complex, the B58 engine appears strong.
The biggest complaint about the new Toyota Supra is thea data-inline-widget=”internal-links” dataparams=”%7B%22alias%22%3A%22bmw%22%7D” datatype_id=”1″> BMW /a> bones beneath the skin, including the B58 inline six engine. It would be the BMWbones underneath the skin, which includes the B58 inline-6 engine. The Supra’s performance isn’t bad – we had a first drive in the new moniker. We saw a car that was extremely fast and capable on both the street and the track. Other Supra test drivers have also made similar comments. This video by PapadakisRacing showing the engine teardown of the new Supra may change your mind.
You can get over it:
The BMW B58 engine has been around for a while. The B58 engine was introduced in 2015. It has been used in many Bimmers, starting with the 1Serie and moving up to the 7 Series. This clip won’t teach BMW enthusiasts anything, but Supraholics who are open-minded might be able to see the potential of this mill. Although we admit to not being engine experts, there are enough to make this video dangerous. Here are some takeaways. Warning: tech-nerd content follows.
The B58 engine is a closed-deck. This design is more robust, which means that the block can handle more horsepower. The video also shows that the crankshaft and connecting rods are strong. This particular Supra project aims to produce 1,000 horsepower (745.7 Kilowatts), and all indications are that this can be achieved with a stock bottom. This is truly remarkable.
The engine is complex on the other hand. Although the exhaust manifold appears to be internal, the intake manifold has an intercooler. We suspect that plastic components won’t hold together well in high-boost conditions. The thermostat is difficult to access and the cam gears and engine timing chain are located at the rear. B6 Audi enthusiasts will discuss the frustrations of this design but, as long as the chain and guides are strong, it shouldn’t be a problem.
Although the engine is BMW, this teardown shows that it is capable of producing big power, which is why the 2JZ was so popular. Only time will tell if the B58 achieves the same cult status.
