Update: Toyota UK sent several tweets Wednesday explaining why its original, now deleted tweet did not explain why Toyota doesn’t license vehicles to certain video games. According to the tweets Toyota does not plan to license its models for any other games than Gran Turismo Sport. In a subsequent tweet, the company stated that it was “really excited” to share its future plans with customers as soon as possible. You can still race the Toyota Supra in NASCAR Heat 4.

Need for Speed had announced the cars available in the game. However, Toyota was not there. The new Toyota Supra is a dream. It will not be the Toyota Tercel SR5 or Celica, MR2 models. This is a shame. However, Toyota’s exclusion from certain video games franchises is not new. Need For Speed did not have Toyota vehicles. One reason could be Use For Speed‘s propensity for illegal street racing. Toyota UK tweeted that the claim was supported by “You can find our vehicles in GT [ Gran Turismo] Sport which doesn’t encourage illegal street racing.”

Although the tweet was deleted, it does not explain Toyota’s absence in other video games. Forza Motorsport7 had no legal Toyota offering and is an analog to the Gran Turismo series. It appears that Toyota’s prohibition of illegal street racing is only applicable to video games. Images showing the 2020 Supra at the set of Fast and Furious 9 were posted . is a movie franchise that has been known for its illegal street racing antics. We have reached out to Toyota and will update this story when we receive back.

Videogame licensing can be unpredictable. This is one reason why video game licensing can be fickle. Porsche Other video games have excluded vehicles. Electronic Arts was the only company that had exclusive rights to Porsche vehicles in videogames for many years. This meant other developers would have to apply to EA to allow Porsche cars to be used in their games. Porsche didn’t appear in a Gran Turismo Game until the last installment Gran Turismo Sport It’s the one reason. Forza Motorsport Others have also used RUF vehicles.

It is disappointing that there are no Toyota cars in Need for Speed Heat, or any other video games franchises. This is an opportunity missed. Video games are where children first experience cars and where they develop affinities for certain makes.
