Acura Dealers Want More SUVs in the Lineup

It’s easy to see why when you look at the brand’s sales.

It feels more like Acura has experienced a true Renaissance. The company seems to be regaining its mojo, and is looking to go after its competitors with more heat, thanks to new products such as the 2021 HTMLX, and 2022 MDX. How is the automaker going to accomplish this? It will need more SUVs, at least according its dealer network.

Automotive News representative John Connelley, Acura Dealer National Advisory Board representative, was quick to get to the heart of what dealership franchises want in an interview.

“When you look at the MDX or RDX, you can see that they sell 50,000 to 60.000 per year. People love them and trust them year after année. Acura has so many equity in their SUVs, it makes perfect sense to have both a crossover which would slot below and above the RDX. There is plenty of space for this.

The RDX, and MDX are Acura’s most popular SUVs. This duo accounts for a large percentage of sales. It is not clear if there is enough room to add two.

Mercedes and BMW have had great success with their smallest crossovers. We can only imagine Acura building something GLA to fit below the RDX. This car can be a great way for younger buyers to get involved with Acura.

The flagship SUV is a market that has been made more competitive by the BMW X7 , Mercedes GLS and Mercedes GLS . A full-size Acura SUV might make more sense with ongoing rumors about a Lexus flagship.

Honda/Acura is a team that prefers to be safe and make calculated moves with minimal risk. We wouldn’t be surprised to see a larger lineup in the near future. However, it’s possible that a longer-term rollout will be possible. We are raving about the latest products at the moment, so any vehicle sporting an A badge is welcome.
