In a few years, the hybrid 805-horsepower AMG GT Concept will be available.
Electrification is the new buzzword in Affalterbach. Mercedes AMG’s boss announced that every model due to be released in 2021 will be electrified. There are already a number of hybrid models within the Daimler division that is responsible for fast cars, such as the six-cylinder “53”, and the F1 engined One hypercar.
The GLS, which was recently revealed in the “580” specification, combines an AMG twin-turbo V8 engine of 4.0-liters with a 48-volt electrical motor to create a mild hybrid system that we will see more of over the coming years. Moers told Road and Track there is no way to go back to traditional engines. We are moving in that direction.
AMG’s head honcho reaffirmed the company’s plans for the bizarre hybrid powertrain from the 2017 Mercedes AMG GT Concept (pictured below) to be put into a production vehicle. It will happen over the next years, and hopefully it will keep the 805-horsepower output from the GT Four-Door Coupe. The GT 63 S is the current range’s top-selling model. However, the electrified version that was teased with the Concept Car would be the next range leader if AMG chooses to use the hybridized engine for its Porsche Panamera rival.
AMG has announced that the V12 engine will be retiring gradually, but the engineers are hard at work on a replacement. Moers suggested that a hybrid V8 and an electric motor could be used as a foundation for future cars.
At least one AMG car is coming soon, but it won’t have an electrified motor. The new HTML45 hot-hat will use a turbocharged gasoline engine of 2.0-liters with up to 420 horsepower. Other “45” cars will follow shortly, based on the A Class Sedan, CLA and GLA plus possibly a GLB 45.
