Are Electric 1,300-HP BMW M2s Coming Soon?

There was a lot of commotion about an M2 that is purely electric.

It sounds impossible to believe that a short-wheelbase all-electric BMW can produce 1,341 horsepower (1,500 kilowatts). This is most likely true, but Car Magazine reported that such a rumor was based on reliable sources. The British magazine codenamed Project Katharina stated that the electric M2 would be available in time for the 50th anniversary celebrations of the BMW M Division. When? In 2022.

Rumours have already circulated about the BMW iM2 sportscar’s performance numbers – 0-60 mph (97 km per hour) in between 2 and 2.5 seconds plus a Nurburgring lap of less than seven minutes.

These rumors and numbers may sound good, but it’s important to remember that no information can be confirmed until the automaker confirms them. Worse, BMW blog claims there’s no truth to the claims the magazine makes. The publication claims that the iM2 project won’t be coming in 2022, and won’t have the power output mentioned.

What gives? We aren’t denying that BMW is exploring the possibility of an electrified performance car. It was actually confirmed indirectly in January with a target launch time this year.

A electric test muel with the body from the M2 was also spotted last month (see gallery below). It is complete with exhaust and the area where the battery packs are supposed to be located within the wheelbase.

However, this was not a confirmation or denial of the BMW iM2. We can only wait and watch for any developments. One thing is certain, however: electrification will not spare BMW’s M Performance Division, sooner or later.
