There is however, something that can fill the void.

While TT is a beloved car, crossovers and SUVs are now the dominant vehicle. Audi’s high-riding lineup is larger than ever. There’s still room for growth considering the Q4 and possibly a HTML9 down the road. The future of the elegant Tourist Trophy is not looking too bright. It’s currently a two-door model with barely usable rear seats.

Ingolstadt’s CEO, Bram Schot, spoke out to Autocar about the imminent end of the TT sportscar in its current form. Audi’s chief honcho answered a question about whether the model would be kept as it is after its third generation.

“I believe there is a future for [Audi] icons, but I don’t know if it’s a TT. That question breaks my heart! Although I don’t necessarily have to replace TT, there are some things that I can do.

Audi has decided to reevaluate the model because the German automaker is currently undergoing a lineup optimization in order to reduce costs and to use the money to finance the development and production of EVs. Schot already saved the company a lot of cash by simplifying the lineup by 27 per cent after discontinuing certain engine and variant combinations.

The TT isn’t a popular product so it’s susceptible to the company’s proverbial axe. You’ll still be in a position to purchase one, as the current generation will not be discontinued until 2022.

What’s next? Audi has dismissed rumors of a TT Sportback four door coupe, similar to the one unveiled at Paris Motor Show 2014. Some media outlets insist that the sedan-like design is still on the horizon. This niche model makes sense, since Audi doesn’t currently have a competitor for the Mercedes CLA or the forthcoming BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe.
