This design is based on a classic Horch.
The Audi Skysphere Concept will be unveiled at Four Rings’ design centre in Malibu (California) on August 10. Audi Head of Design Marc Lichte, and Audi Senior Vice President Henrik Wenders share a video discussing the inspiration for the new model.
Wenders and Lichte claim that the Skysphere is inspired by the Horch 853A. Both models have a long nose and a smooth-sculpted rear. Although we don’t have a good look at the interior of the Skysphere, the video shows that it will be luxurious with high-end materials as well as cutting-edge technology.
Skysphere is expected to be an electric vehicle, so the long hood is mostly a design exercise. There isn’t any engine to cover. It reduces passenger space, but still maintains a sports coupe look.
Audi wants the Skysphere to be both an engaging driver’s vehicle and a machine that can switch to autonomous driving. The cabin can be transformed into a lounge if the driver is not present.
Audi’s new trio of concepts includes the Skysphere and the Grand Sphere. This trio is Audi’s attempt at “reinventing mobility as we know.” Each vehicle will be equipped with tech that allows it to recognize its owners and learn their preferences.
Audi has already teased the Grand Sphere. It maximizes passenger space with its short overhangs, long wheelbase and wide wheels. Drivers with level 4 autonomy would not need to be in control of the vehicle unless they wanted to. The cabin can be used as a living space on wheels. The IAA Munich show will see the debut of the model.
2022 will see the arrival of The Urban Sphere. This is a teaser image that suggests it could be a large crossover vehicle or minivan capable of driving autonomously around a city.
