Unfortunately, such a model is not viable in the business world.
Since it is the entry-level model in BMW’s ever-growing range, the 1 Series has been widely considered to be the spiritual successor to the 3 Series Compact. The third-generation F40 model, which was launched in 2019, was switched to front-wheel drive. This allowed it to lose the tail-happy characteristics of its predecessors and also eliminated the three-door body design.
What if BMW brought back the 3 Series Compact. The model was compared to the much-maligned Mercedes C-Class Sports Coupe in the latter part of its lifespan and was eventually discontinued in 2004 to make way for the 1 Series. A rendering by Kolesa.ru shows a hypothetical revival of the 3 Series Sedan in the 330i color and with the M Sport Package.
We don’t like to say it, but BMW would rather have a new SUV than an old hatchback. Recent trademark filings indicate that an X8 and an M version are on the horizon. Keep in mind that the Bavarians sold a hatchback version 3 Series in recent years, using the unusually shaped Gran Turismo. However, the five-door fastback was larger than the sedan it was based on. The GT was discontinued by BMW in March, and there is no successor.
Although the idea of a 3 Series Compact may seem appealing to enthusiasts who long for RWD-only BMWs in the past, the bean counters think “X” is the most popular segment as the SUV.
