BMW Design Boss: ‘Good Design is Not About Pretty or Ugly’

Domagoj Dukec once again speaks out about the controversial Bimmer.

We believe that there’s no one in the car design world as controversial as the man who designed the new BMW 4 Series. Domagoj Dukec is the head of BMW’s design department. Despite the heat, he spoke to Esquire about his career as a designer.

In a paid advertisement interview, Dukec described the 4 Series as a parent would. He stated that the 4 Series is not as radical as the media or the rest of the globe see it and that it is a very elegant car with very good proportions.
He continues to say that people should not look at the grille as such, but the whole car, even comparing it with a three-course meal at a restaurant. Dukec seems to forget that the 4 Series’ faults are not all about its ridiculously large grille. pointed out that the decreased beltline angle and the removal of the Hofmeisterkink are just two of the criticisms.

Dukec stated that good design does not have to be pretty or ugly, as both are subjective. He reiterated his previous statement about designing something that 100% of people like. He concluded his remarks by saying that they want people to fall in love with their car forever, not the same way that an attractive person would.

We agree to a certain extent with Dukec’s recent interviews in defense for the 4 Series. It’s impossible to please everyone, especially when you have millions or billions of fans all over the globe.

But, if the public reacts negatively (which BMW acknowledged), then it is obvious that something’s wrong.
