BMW Invents Hybrid Minivan with 270 Horsepower

This is the hot hatch of people carriers.

Two months ago, we spotted the next-generation BMW 2 Series Active Tourer with production bodies and lights. New spy photos suggest a premium minivan that is sharper and more powerful for European markets.

BMW Blog reports that the next-generation 2 Series AT could get a plug-in hybrid system. This will be called the 230xe moniker. It will replace the 225xe. The engine will be a turbocharged gasoline engine with an electric motor. It will produce 270 horsepower (201 megawatts) combined, which could make it the most powerful minivan in Bavaria.

The new PHEV people carrier, while not much else is known at this time, will be more powerful than the one it replaces. The 225xe uses a 1.5-lite engine with small electric motor to produce a total output of 224 horsepower (167 kW). The outgoing model’s six speed automatic transmission will be replaced with an eight-speed auto.

BMW Blog states that the 2 Series Active Tourer will come with four powertrains at launch. The gasoline 218i (155 HP/115kW), 220i (177.5 hp/133kW) and 223i (223 hp/149kW) are all available, with the latter two featuring mild hybrid technology. The 218d diesel will have 148 horsepower (110 kW).

The new 2AT will look much more sleeker than its predecessor. The new Active Tourer, despite its larger dimensions, will effectively replace the Grand Tourer. The minivan’s appearance will be sharper thanks to slimmer headlights and pop-out door handles.
