Recent dealer presentations in the Netherlands have revealed additional specifications and concrete evidence for BMW’s long-rumored 5-Series diesel engine from M division.
The leaked specifications show that the tri-turbo six cylinder diesel will have 381 PS (375 horsepower / 280kW). This doesn’t sound like M-division territory but the torque figure of more than 700 Nm (516 lbft) makes this a viable alternative for the BMW 550i (402 hp /300 kW) as well as 600 Nm (440 lbft) of torque.
Officially, BMW has not yet confirmed that the model is a diesel M5. But, Brian Watts, global marketing manager for M division, has confirmed that the model is being considered.
This information raises speculation about the M550d being available in F10 sedan and F11-wagon versions. The tri-diesel engine may also be found in the X5M/X6M SAVs.
