BMW: The New Grille will Change Your Mind

Also… beware, Hofmeister Kink.

It’s rare that someone on the internet doesn’t criticize the new grille design for the BMW 4 Series as well as the HTML3 and combo. People have always laughed at it.

BMW is listening, and we are too. That’s fine. The automaker believes good design doesn’t suit everyone. Just in case you aren’t convinced, the BMWblog interview of BMW design chiefs Head of Design Domagoj Dukec (and Group Design Chief Adrian Van Hooydonk) has provided some insight into how to appreciate the new grilles.

Dukec stated that cars and other items “best experienced in-person.”

He said, “And we believe customers will have another opinion of the kidney grille once they see it in real life.”

To some degree, I believe the man. The massive “lungs” are real and will make you love them once you’ve seen them in metal. They aren’t my favorite right now, but they’re not as offensive to me as before.

Interview with BMWblog has been extensive about the process of creating the new BMW designs. However, one statement by Dukec is that he believes changes in design icons should occur over time.

The double-circle headlight designs were dropped due to the increased size of the grille. It seems that the Hofmeisterkink, a classic for BMW vehicles since the ’60s is now in danger.

We are not sure if this bothers you, but we would love to hear your thoughts in the comment section below.
