It’s better to be late than never
A First Edition concept is not new. Automakers have been updating their models for a while to attract more early adopters. BMW is not unfamiliar with First Edition models. In recent years, several FE models have been launched by the company, including the Z4, M5, and M8 Gran Coupe.
Bavaria’s First Edition lineup has a new member, the X5 M Competition (and X6 M Competition) which were first unveiled in October 2019. Twelve months later, the FE models offer a variety of visual tweaks inside as well as out for a limited production run of 250 units each SUV.
You can choose to have the BMW Individual Frozen Dark Silver or Frozen Marina Bay Blue as an optional color. The dynamic duo is seated on 21-inch front wheels and 22-inch rear tires with a star-spoke design, and a Jet Black finish. The carbon fiber reinforced plastic accents (CFRP), complemented by an M-branded carbon cover, round out the exterior changes.
The X5 M Competition and X6 M Competition models in First Edition specifications get a BMW Individual Merino full-leather trim with a Silverstone/Midnight Blue look. The Alcantara-wrapped headliner is available in Midnight Blue. Both the door panel trims and the instrument panel are contrast stitched.
BMW also installed the “First Edition 1/250” in order to emphasize that this is not a standard version of its already high-end SUVs. Although the company does not specify the price, it is safe to assume that you will pay significantly more than the X5M’s starting price at $105,100 or the X6M’s $108,600. This is especially true considering the Competition Package adds an additional $9,000.
The X5 M Competition First Edition and X6 M Competition First Edition share the same twin-turbo 4.4 liter V8 engine with 617 horsepower and 553 pound feet (750 Newton-meters) respectively. The output is sent to the xDrive system via a ZF eight-speed automatic. This allows the luxobarges reach 60 mph in a staggering 3.7 seconds. They can reach speeds of 177 mph (or 285 km/h) flat out.
