BMW X7 vs. BMW X5 – Compare the Differences Side-Byside

It might surprise you to see how similar they are.

The new BMW X7 full size SUV has been released after a long and very public period of testing. The three-row beast from Munich will be competing with many other competitors, not least the Lexus LX and Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class.

BMW X7 vs. BMW X5 - Compare the Differences Side-Byside

With the arrival of the X7, BMW’s original SUV, the X5, is no longer the king of the mountain. This is a good thing, at least in terms of overall size and cost. A new X5 was unveiled earlier this year and it isn’t small. The smaller X5 could still be the best choice for those looking to move big Bimmers. Let’s compare the X5 and X7 in the below comparisons.

Front

The X7 is clearly the larger brawler. But you may be surprised at how much there is to choose from. The X7 is 71.06 inches tall while the X5 measures 68.7 inches. The X5 is wider then the X7. These SUVs are almost identical, albeit by a narrow margin of 78.9 inches to 78.7 inches. The X7’s larger kidney grille and chiseled fascia front makes it appear much larger. However, the X5 isn’t any different to its bigger brother. At least, the X5 looks head-on.

Profil

This is where the SUVs really differ. The X7 measures 202.8 inches while the X5 is 193.8 inches. This is almost a foot difference. It’s what makes the difference between having a third row for passengers and having an optional third row where groceries would normally be placed. The wheelbases of the two vehicles are more close – 117.13 inches on the X5 and 122.24 inches on the X7. This is a difference of only five inches.

Rear

Although we’ve discussed the dimensions of these SUVs, without the distractions of a large grille or square chin, it’s still shocking to see how similar they are from behind. This perspective makes it easier to see the small height advantage that the X7 has, which would be a boon for the rear-seat passengers. The greenhouse appears just a little taller than the X5 while it is just a touch wider.

Inside

Are you ready for a surprise? The interior layouts of both SUVs is almost identical, considering they are nearly identical in width. From the front, at least. However, the smaller X5 is a close match for the X7 from a driver’s point-of-view.

The third row is undoubtedly the X7’s greatest feature. Although the X5 will have a third row (second row is pictured to the left), it won’t be as spacious as the BMW’s new flagship.

After comparing these two SUVs side-by-side, and realizing how similar they are, we were eager to test the new X7. It could be difficult to justify paying more for the same experience as the tried-and-true X5, aside from the extra space in the back.
