You won’t see a liftback version of the car.
The 2020 Cadillac CT5 targets what the brand refers to as the “Lux 3”, which is comprised of vehicles such the BMW 3 Series. However, its dimensions place it right between the 3 Series or 5 Series. This strategy is reminiscent of the positioning of CTS 2, which was a good seller for Cadillac. The CTS was available in coupe, sedan and wagon versions, but the CT5 seems to be a sedan.
“As far and additional body styles, we can’t announce anything at the moment,” Mike Bride, CT5 chief engineering in an interview with .com.
This seems a pretty wide-ranging question, but Bride did mention that other body types, such as a liftback, were being evaluated. However, structural stiffness and mass targets meant that they didn’t get the job done. A CT5 liftback, despite its distinctive roofline and sloped roofline looks great, would be heavier than a sedan. Therefore, it was not considered favorable.
Further confirmation from GM was provided by additional sources. The CT5 will not come in either a coupe or wagon variant. Cadillac will no longer offer a coupe as a product option, due to the loss of the ATS and the lack of a two-door body design. It will however soon have three highly-needed crossovers so that’s that.
The Cadillac CT5 promises to continue the athletic qualities of the Alpha architecture, which the /ATS and CTS were built on. It will also offer a more refined ride. The 2020 Cadillac CT5 offers 11.9 cubic feet of storage space with a standard 60/40 split-folding rear seat. This will be sufficient for most people. This fall, the new CT5 will become available for order. An CT5V-V may be available in the future.
Bride joked when asked if anyone missed the Cadillac CTS Wagon.
