It can carry two people and displays the world through large windows or large digital screens.
General Motors had a lot to say at its virtual press conference for CES-2022. The unveiling of the 2024 Chevrolet Silverado EV was the main event. But, amid all the technology discussion and a peek at the upcoming Equinox EV, came a snazzy concept vehicle from Cadillac named the InnerSpace.
This name may be familiar because of a few reasons. Not the least being the 1987 movie in which Dennis Quaid flew a ship into Martin Short. Cadillac’s “space” concept fleet is growing, which was launched at last year’s CES.
PersonalSpace and SocialSpace. InnerSpace, as the name implies, is all about creating a calm and serene atmosphere. It’s also luxurious. The cabin is fully autonomous and allows the occupants to interact with the outside while AI software strives for a personalized experience.
What does this mean? The large LED panoramic display allows passengers to interact with the functions of their car. It offers everything from augmented reality and entertainment. This is similar to watching movies or playing videogames. Cadillac also refers to “wellness recovery themes”, which are presumably things that can help you relax after a long day at work. There are many windows on the sides and roof of the car for looking out at the outside world.
The car is long and low, giving it a sporty look. The Ultium battery modules in this concept are spread out rather than being part of one large pack. Cadillac says this allows InnerSpace to feel more open and creates a relaxed environment. This allows the floor to be placed just above the road, giving it a sporty feeling.
Bryan Nesbitt is GM’s executive director for Global Advanced Design and Global Architecture Studio. “Electrification, autonomous driving, and their role in vehicles will fundamentally alter the roles of these vehicles and the experiences customers have using them,” he said. We’re looking at these new concepts and exploring the possibilities. Mobility is being viewed as an ally in wellness. Customers will have more time to enjoy it, rather than take it.
The InnerSpace is an abstract concept so don’t be surprised if it doesn’t make it into production. It’s possible that some aspects of the design and technology will be incorporated into future production vehicles.
