Is there enough room at GM to have a full-sized SUV that is sporty?
Chevrolet does not offer a two-door full-size SUV. There are no rumors suggesting that one is coming. But, back in 1990, could buy a large Tahoe with 2 doors. This was back when the Ford Bronco was large enough to be a full-size SUV. How about Chevy reviving the idea?
Nikita Chuiko from Kolesa.ru has the answer to that question – at least visually. The new Tahoe, which is the current generation, was introduced in late 2019 and will be available for the 2021 model year. It comes with a variety of engines including a diesel option. The new chassis gives the SUV an independent rear suspension. This is perhaps more important than a sporty two door. A 6.2-liter V8 is added to the engine and the two-door Tahoe RST suddenly looks great.
It’s not as easy as just removing half of the doors to convert a two-door vehicle. These renderings show a Tahoe with a shorter wheelbase and shorter rear and front overhangs. This would require significant retooling. There is also the unfortunate truth that rear-seat access is less accessible, which can make an SUV less appealing to buyers. People want more seating, not fewer doors.
This is not the point of this fictional exercise. Although a two-door Tahoe would not be a big seller, it could fill a niche where there isn’t much full-size competition. GM does not have a two-door offroader in any category to compete with the likes the Jeep Wrangler and new Ford Bronco. So maybe there’s an argument for a two-door Tahoe. However, it is unlikely that anything will ever happen.
GM should consider a Chevy Tahoe two-door model, or a reborn GMC Yukon GT. Your best argument is welcome in the comments. You might be heard by GM
