Quality and reliability don’t necessarily reflect the satisfaction of owners.
It can be difficult to find the right statistic about owner satisfaction. If you ask someone two weeks after they have purchased a car, the answer will likely be positive. The same person could answer the same question one year later, and the results might be totally different.
Consumer Reports aims to provide some order to the topic of owner satisfaction by providing a comprehensive list of the most and least loved brands. The 2020 Annual Autos Survey includes 369,000 cars. However, a final score doesn’t just depend on whether people say that they would buy their car again. A final score is calculated by adding five satisfaction categories, including driving, comfort and storage.
You’ve seen the headline and Tesla was the best, while Infiniti was the worst. Infiniti scored 48 and Tesla received 88. There’s more to this than the numbers. Consumer Reports clarifies the fact that this study is not about build quality or reliability but cars meeting owners’ expectations. A model might be loved by someone who doesn’t have to use it every day. If it is completely uninspiring, a model that is reliable and faultless can score low.
With this in mind, we can see that Tesla was the highest scoring for driving and the highest for comfort and electronics. Although storage was average, Tesla scored a 1/5 for value, which is the lowest possible score. Infiniti was also the lowest in value but earned a 1 of 5 for electronics. While cabin storage was below average while comfort and driving were only average.
Lincoln is second in the list, followed by Ram and Chrysler. Nissan was ranked 58 in the bottom half. It was followed by Cadillac and Buick. Consumer Reports points out that brands may offer only a handful of models, while others have many. This can impact scores. Brands must offer at least two models to be eligible for the survey. The study excluded several brands such as Acura, Alfa Romeo and Fiat, Genesis Jaguar, Land Rover Maserati, Maserati, Maserati, Maserati, Maserati, Maserati, Maserati, Maserati, and Alfa Romeo.
