Consumer Reports has released its annual list of 10 models it considers the best in a range of categories. These picks are based on both survey results and internal tests. To be considered for a spot, the model must include a forward collision warning system and automatic emergency brake with pedestrian detection.
Toyota Corolla
Small Cars: Below $25,000
For those looking for a reliable, affordable sedan, the Toyota Corolla is the best choice. The Apex model is for those who want a little more power. There is a rumor that a new GR variant will be available in the future.
Mazda CX-30
Subcompact Crossover: Under $25,000
The Mazda CX-30 only was introduced for the 2020 model year. It has already been named to the Consumer Reports top cars list. The Turbo trim was added to the crossover for 2021. The price starts at $29900. This is more than CR’s award price range, but buyers get a 2.5-liter turbocharged four cylinder producing 250 horsepower.
Toyota Prius
Hybrid: $25,000-$35,000
Although there are many hybrid vehicles available, Consumer Reports still rates the Toyota Prius as being the best in its price range. Toyota has introduced an all-wheel drive version for those who love the vehicle, but need more traction.
Toyota Camry
Midsized Sedan: $25,000-$35,000
Yes, another Toyota. The Camry is a great entry into the midsize sedan segment. There are many variants available, including the hybrid and the all-wheel-drive . The minor update for the 2021 model-year also included improvements to safety assistance tech.
Subaru Forester
Small Crossovers: $25,000-35,000
The Subaru Forester is getting a refresh for the 2022 model-year. However, Consumer Reports believes the current one is worthy enough to be included on this list. For buyers who plan to drive the crossover off-road, there’s an even more rugged Wilderness version in development.
Subaru Outback
SUV/Wagon: $35,000-$45,000
Here’s another Subaru. The Outback, while slightly larger than the Forester, still has two rows of seating. The styling of the Outback is closer to a crossover station wagon with suspension lift than a traditional crossover. The Outback will soon get a Wilderness edition.
Kia Telluride
Midsized Three Row Crossover: $35,000 – $45,000
The Kia Telluride is a highly-acclaimed vehicle that has won numerous awards, including World Car of the Year as well as North American Utility of the Year. It is also liked by Consumer Reports. There’s a slight price rise for the model year 2021.
Honda Ridgeline
Compact Pickup Truck – $35,000 – $45,000
The Honda Ridgeline received a refresh in the model year 2021. A new face has been introduced with a more aggressive styling. All grades of pickups now come standard with all-wheel drive.
Lexus RX
Midsized Crossover: $45,000-$55,000
The 2020 model year saw a refresh of the Lexus RX which gave it a slightly new appearance, with new headlights. The automaker also made the interior more attractive by making a 12.3-inch infotainment display available. Safety tech was also improved.
Tesla Model 3
Electric Cars: $45,000-55,000
Consumer Reports is impressed by the Tesla Model 3’s acceleration, handling and huge touchscreen. The automaker has just reduced the base price of the model by $1,000 to make it even more impressive. Recent updates included a larger capacity battery.
