Drag Races of the 3.0-Liter Supra 300-Horsepower Toyota GR Yaris

The tuned GR Yaris is extremely quick off the line.

Because of its rave reviews, the Toyota GR Yaris is a favorite among American enthusiasts. CarWow shows how a tuned example compares to a stock Supra3.0.

Litchfield has made upgrades to this GR Yaris, increasing the power output to 302 horsepower (385 kilowatts) as well as 284 pound-feet (385 Newton meters) of torque. These are remarkable numbers for a 1.6-liter, three-cylinder engine.

It will be up against the European-spec Supra with 340 HP (254 kW), and 369 Lb-ft (399 Nm) of torque. The US version is comparable with 382 HP (285 kW), and 368 Lb-ft (499Nm).

The tuned GR Yaris really shines in drag racing from a standing position. It leads the race with its all-wheel drive and plenty of power. During both launches, the Yaris is ahead but the Supra is able pull it in. The gap in the quarter mile is only 0.01 seconds, however, according to the timed run.

The Supra’s superior torque is what makes the difference in the rolling race. The GR Yaris has its problems, and its driver complains about the tight gates between the gears making it difficult to learn downshifts. This might not be a problem for owners who have spent a lot of time learning the car.

CarWow should have performed the brake test again. The GR Yaris must stop on a wet section of the runway. The Supra’s lane, however, is mostly dry. Although the Yaris is slower to stop, it would be nice to have them in similar conditions.

The GR Yaris is not expected to arrive in the US, unfortunately. Videos are the best way for you to see the hot hatch until Toyota makes the GR Corolla.
