Emissions Regulations Give Two-Door Jeep Wrangler The Axe in Europe

Only four doors and a PHEV setup will be offered on the Old Continent.

Automakers must constantly update their product lines to comply with strict European emissions regulations. The Wrangler will go PHEV from next year. This will effectively eliminate the two-door model since the electrified engine is only available in the more practical body design.

The two-door Wrangler on the Old Continent will soon be gone. It has been discontinued in many Euro countries like France. Automotive News Europe learned from a Jeep spokesperson that the fate of the Wrangler without rear doors is sealed because the plug-in hybrid hardware used with the 4xe model does not fit within the shorter wheelbase for the two-door version.

JATO Dynamics data shows that approximately 30% of Wrangler European customers opt for the two-door model. Jeep sold just over 2,600 of the iconic offroader in the first five month of the year on Euro Land, where it also offers electrified 4xe derivatives such as the Compass or Renegade.

The V8-powered Wrangler Rubicon392 is unlikely to reach Europe, where naturally aspirated eight cylinder engines are virtually non-existent. Similar to the 4xe version, the sporty version comes only with four doors and would likely cost a lot more than the regular model.
