The 911 Overlander is a super cool guy and he loves a roof tent.
We have seen many Porsche 911 Carrera Safari conversions. We’ve also seen an roof tent installed on a 996 Carrera4S. Kelly-Moss Road in Wisconsin and Race in Wisconsin have now achieved what we’ve been waiting for: a proper safari 911 with provisions to roof camping. As you can see from the Porsche-on-Porsche photo at the top of this article, this car is much more. So. Much. More.
We can’t possibly capture all of the details on this classic Carrera build. So make sure you visit kellymoss.com to see all the details. The highlights of this 1984 911 Carrera are that it may appear relatively stocky, but almost every body panel has been removed or retouched in some way. The wheel arches are almost three inches wider than a standard 911 Carrera of the era. Additionally, the inner front arches have five inches more clearance to accommodate the huge BG Goodrich tires.
The cage is custom-made and extended into the chassis to provide exceptional support and strength. The cage also has a custom roof rack that can be attached to it. It is capable of supporting large loads. A rooftop tent is a lighter than a race car. However, the 911 weighs only 2,500 pounds despite all its reinforcement and fabrication.
It can still perform like a 911. The modified 3.4-liter flat-6 produces 340 horsepower (254kW) and is driven by a 915 manual gearbox. Eibach springs provide 11 inches of travel frontally and 10 inches backwards, and have Exe-Tc twin-tube gravel dampers that can be adjusted. The digital transformation of the cockpit includes a reverse camera and leather Recaros seats.
This rally 911 built by Willy is one-of-a kind. The best thing about this one-off build is the fact that it was kept relatively stock. Motor1.com’s motorhome archives is filled with epic overlanders, adventure vehicles, but this one could be our favorite.
